Unless you are living under a rock or have an innate ability to ignore news all together, I am sure you have heard about the Government shutdown.
I am hear to talk about the food safety implications and what it means to us as consumers.
Currently the FDA is responsible for monitoring 80% of all U.S. foods. Unfortunately all FDA employees are furloughed along with the food safety inspectors at the Centers for Disease Control and prevention.
What does this mean?
This means that fruits, vegetables, seafood, and virtually everything that comes through our customs is not being inspected for quality or disease.
Without proper inspection who is to say that the food we are consuming is safe to eat?
What can restaurants or food handlers do to protect themselves from serving tainted products?
The first step is to understand exactly where your product is coming from and develop a relationship with your suppliers.
Step 2: Source local foods!
Most people are pleasantly surprised when they find out that most of the food they consume can be sourced locally and usually its fresher and better!
